How to split rent and bills fairly with flatmates

Room sizes, shared bills, deposits and the one person who is never home: a practical way to keep a flat fair.

Splitting rent equally works until one room has a balcony and another is a box room. Here is a simple way to keep a flat fair without spreadsheets.

Rent: split by shares, not equally

Agree a share per room once, when everyone moves in. A common method is to give each room points for size and extras (an attached bathroom, a balcony) and split rent by points. In Settl, add rent as one expense and choose Shares: give the big room 3 shares and the small rooms 2 each. Settl does the arithmetic in paise, so nobody gets a rounding surprise.

Bills: equal, with exceptions written down

Wifi, electricity and the cook are usually split equally. If someone is away for a month, use Adjust to take a fixed amount off their share rather than arguing about it later.

Groceries: log as you go

Whoever pays logs it the same day. Telling Scrooge "groceries 640 in Flat 302" (your group's name) is quicker than remembering at month end.

Deposits

Record the deposit as its own expense in the flat's group with a note. When someone moves out, their part of the deposit is visible and nobody has to dig through old chats.

Settle monthly

Turn on Simplify debts for the flat so the month ends in the fewest payments, then settle over UPI. A fixed settle-up day stops small amounts from becoming awkward ones.

Start a flat group in Settl.
